The city is linked to a colony (in a place called Petersbergl) of monks from the monastery Schäftlarn. It is unknown the exact date of foundation settlement. The first document dates from 1158 under the Medieval Latin Munichen villa during Heinrich der
Löwe (Henry the Lion), Duke of Saxony. A half century later the town received city status and was fortified.
Munich is a popular tourist destination, being called the secret capital of Germany. Maria Square (Marienplatz, named after the column with a statue of the Virgin Mary in the center plaza), with the new and the old town hall, by appealing to their towers in
the main tower of City Hall in November with the mechanism being housed statues and bells (Rathaus-Glockenspiel), an ornate clock moving figures representing medieval scenes and is operated at certain times.
