About Bremen - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Bremen is a city located in north western Germany. Port town, along the river Weser, Bremen is part of the Bremen-Oldenburg metropolitan area.
Bremen was a member of the medieval Hanseatic League and is still one of the most important cities in northern Germany. Together with the city of Bremerhaven, bordering the North Sea, is the smallest province of Germany. Bremen has more than 1,200 years of history, along which functioned largely as an independent city-state.
Bremen is an interesting city, most of its tourism objectives can be found in the Altstadt (Old Town), an oval area surrounded by the river Weser. The oldest part of the Altstadt is the southeast half, which begins and ends with Market Marktplatz Schnoor.
Marktplatz is dominated by the opulent façade of City Hall. The building was built in the period 1405 - 1410 in Gothic style, but the façade was built two centuries later, in the Renaissance style. Today, the original building houses a restaurant decorated with giant barrels of wine, Ratskeller and the wine list includes more than 600 varieties, only German. It is also home to twelve of the oldest wines in the world kept in their original barrels in the Apostel chamber.
One of the most popular attractions in Bremen is Böttcherstraße that between 1923 -1931 has been converted by local artists in a narrow street and Fada in an inspired mixture of Gothic and Art Nouveau. It was considered vicious art by the Nazis.
More contemporary tourist attractions in the city are: Universum Science Center, trips to Beck's ale, which include beer tasting, and Kunsthalle Bremen, an art museum with paintings dating from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
