About Garmisch Partenkirchen - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Garmisch-Partenkirchen – Top of Germany!
Garmisch-Partenkirchen lies at an altitude of approx. 707 m at the foot of the Wetterstein mountain range. Even today there is still a special kind of atmosphere in this resort, which was the site of the 1936 Winter Olympic Games. Garmisch-Partenkirchen is also Germany's most significant winter sports location and has one of the best therapeutic climates. No matter whether you are looking for rest and relaxation or sports and fun, here you will find everything you seek. The historic street "Ludwigstraße" invites you to shop, stop in and savour its elegant stores, the quaint, often traditional shops, various restaurants, and cosy huts. You shouldn't miss the big yearly sporting events such as the Four Hills Tournament ski jumping competition or the world cup downhill event!
SkiWith the "Top Snow Card" you have access to 89 lifts and 207 kilometres of piste between 740 - 2,720 m in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Mittenwald and the Austrian side of the Tyrolean Zugspitz region (see ski region).
In Garmisch-Partenkirchen you have direct access to the classic ski area (local mountain, Kreuzeck and Alpspitz/Ostenfelder) and the Zugspitze. A total of 62 km of skiing pistes can be found in these ski areas. A diverse ski area with the famous and very challenging 3.4 km long Kandahar run awaits you at the local mountain.
The Zugspitze offers 22 km of superbly prepared pistes, a fun park as well as a deep-snow El Dorado with free rider zones await you here. The soft ski slopes on the Zugspitzplatt ensure that even less-practised skiers don't have to miss out on snow-sure ski fun on Germany's highest peak.
With the "Twin Ticket" the Classic-ski area and the Zugspitze are available to you. This ski area is also renowned for its events, such as the FIS World Cup and the annual New Year's Jump!
In the resort, 5 wifi hotspots from Kabel Deutschland are available.
In Garmisch-Partenkirchen there is no limit to the amount of fun you can have! Various bars, discos, clubs and pubs invite you to a well-deserved apres ski. The rustic huts and snow bars ensure the right atmosphere after skiing. A top meeting point for all snowboarders and skiers is the bar at the "Sonn Alpin" directly on the peak of the Zugspitz. In addition, an evening in the casino promises to keep you entertained!
Garmisch-Partenkirchen is also Germany's number one in other winter sports: 110 km of winter hiking trails, various cross-country trails (some floodlit), ice skating opportunities, wave pool as well as the chance to go ballooning and paragliding.
Alternatively, walk through the ravines of the Partnachklamm and experience unique nature there. High fun-factor is guaranteed with the 3.9 km long tobbogan run at the local mountain.
Altogether the region offers 45.5 km of cross-country skiing tracks. Garmisch-Patenkirchen itself has 28 km, Grainau another 17.5 km. Amongst those there are some skating tracks. Beginners can find simple but beautiful trails on the outskirts of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. If you are a cross-country skiing novice, here you have the chance to take professional lessons.
If you are searching for the ultimate challenge, you should really try to master the 42 km trail that takes you past Kaltenbrunn and Barmsee to Krün! Night trails can be found in the Olympic Stadium (1.5 km) or, if you should prefer nature, in Grainau (Krepbachloipe, 1.2 km).
