About Grainau - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Grainau – the cosy village at the Zugspitze!
The small resort Grainau's origin can be traced back 700 years. It lies in the shadows of the mighty Zugspitze (2,962 m) and Waxenstein (2,277 m) in the Wetterstein mountain massif. The Grainau valley offers a wonderfully unique and original panorama with its two mountain lakes and the picturesque landscape. The Bavarian village itself is divided into Upper Grainau and Lower Grainau and demonstrates country idyll. The most prominent landmark is the new-baroque church St. Johannes with a very pretty onion dome.
The village is a wonderful retreat place, offering magnificent views, but also providing access to lively Garmisch-Partenkirchen, which is only approx. 7 km away. In Grainau, holiday guests can explore winter sports activities, such as ice skating on the Bader- and Eib lakes, cross-country skiing, tobogganing, sledging and of course skiing in the ski areas of the Zugspitze.
SkiWith the "Top Snow Card" you have access to 87 lifts and 214 kilometres of piste between 740 - 2,720 m in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Mittenwald and the Austrian side of the Tyrolean Zugspitz region (see ski region).
In Garmisch-Partenkirchen you have direct access to the Classic ski area (local mountain, Kreuzeck and Alpspitz/Ostenfelder) and the Zugspitze. A total of 40 km of pistes and five valley runs that can be covered with artificial snow can be found in these ski areas. A diverse ski area with the famous and very challenging 3.4 km long Kandahar run awaits you at the local mountain. The longest slope in the ski area is the valley run from Osterfelderkopf mountain: it offers a length of 8.8 km and a difference in height of 1,330 m.
The Zugspitze offers 20 km of superbly prepared pistes and deep-powder snow areas with freeride zones. Soft practice slopes on the Zugspitzplatt ensure that the lesser experienced can enjoy some fun in the snow on Germany's highest peak.
With the "Twin Ticket" you have access to the Classic ski area and the Zugspitze. The area is also known for its ski events such as the FIS World Cup and the annual New Year's ski jumping sessions.
After a day on skis, there are further possibilities to stay active. Toboggan fans will enjoy the child-friendly natural toboggan slope (approx. 150 m) directly in Dorf am Gschwendt, a hire shop can be found close by. For more toboggan fun, the neighbouring Garmisch-Partenkirchen has a total of 5 km of toboggan runs available.
The natural ice rink in Grainau invites with ice skating and curling possibilities. With a bit of luck,, Lake Eibsee will be frozen so that you can go and have a walk or slide on the natural ice. Guided snow shoe tours start at the Grainau Kurhaus where two different routes lead you through the fairytale region of the Zugspitze. For those who have the Grainau Card, this experience is for free.
In order to relax you like to go for a swim? Then a visit to the spacious spa Zugspitzbad Grainau will be perfect for you. The little ones can have a splash and the adults have time to relax.
To end the day with a highlight, let your palate enjoy the tasty Grainau cuisine.
