Hamburg is the name of one of the 16 federal states of Germany. As land is the same city, namely the state-city official called "Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg (Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg, German). The Mayor is also the president and government land, government in Hamburg called "Senator." City official name refers to its links with the Hanseatic League. Currently Germany is the main port. It has 1.8 million inhabitants and is thus the second city in number of population in Germany and seventh in the European Union. The heart of the "European Hamburg metropolitan region, with an area of 750 km ².
At Maschen the south of the city, is the largest rail bus yard in Europe.
It is found in northern Germany, at mouth of the river Alster and River Elbe Bill. Tidal river port lies mainly on the southern shore of the northern arm, across the street from Altona and St. neighborhoods. Pauli. The banks are connected by bridges and through the old Elbe tunnel and tunnels in November. To the north and south of the river land is a high meadow (Geest), sand and debris, arising from the ice ages. Low Meadow (Marsh) of sand and silt from the river nearby, is the result of centuries of flooding caused by tidal waves. Hamburg's current borders were barely established on 1 April 1937 (Groß-Hamburg-Gesetz). The city is both the surface and the second in population in Germany.
It is bounded to the north of Schleswig-Holstein and Niedersachsen south. May I belong administratively to the "Hamburg Mitte" Neuwerk islands, Scharhörn, and national park Nigehörn "Hamburgisches Wadden Sea at the mouth of the Elbe.
