Leipzig is a city in eastern Germany. It is the largest city and one of the six major centers of Saxony.
The name comes from the glory of the city, in the forms Lipski, Lipsko and means "place of lime." In Romanian the city's old name was "Leipzig" and residents were called "Lipscani. Bucharest Street Lipscani so called because they used the Leipzig merchants to sell goods on the street.
In the 17th century, Leipzig was one of the most important European centers of culture and education in areas such as music, astronomy and optics. After World War II, Leipzig has become an important urban center of Communist Germany.
Leipzig played later an important role in the collapse of communism in East Germany, the events that took place in and around St. Nicholas Church. Since German reunification, Leipzig has changed significantly, by restoring historic buildings and developing a modern transport infrastructure.
In 2009, Leipzig was ranked 35 in the world, out of 256 cities competing for cultural innovation, economic and social development.
The architecture of the city Leipzig is rich in contrasts, an interesting mix of historic and modern buildings.
The city center is unique, here bars, pubs and restaurants are lined up in rows and are host twice a year, the so-called Honky Tonk Pub Festival, which is the largest of its kind in Europe.
Point and Old Town Hall, Market Naschmarkt dominated by the Alte Börse (Old Market) or the parks and green areas which cover one third of the city area, are an important tourist destination in Leipzig.
