General information
Passau lies, with its 50,000 inhabitants, at an altitude of 302 m. Those who visit the 'town of three rivers' for the first time are more likely to think they have arrived in north Italy than at the main gate of the Bavarian forest. Southern flair surrounds this town, whose centre, on the tapered peninsula between the Donau and Inn rivers, seems like a huge ship sailing the waves. The river Inn, which has its source in the Alps, forcefully joins the river Donau in Passau. Rather more modestly, the dark Ilz, coming from the Bavarian forest, joins the river here too.
