The small resort Grainau's origin can be traced back 700 years. It lies in the shadows of the mighty Zugspitze (2,962 m) and Waxenstein (2,277 m) in the Wetterstein mountain massif. The Grainau valley offers a wonderfully unique and original panorama with
its two mountain lakes and the picturesque landscape. The Bavarian village itself is divided into Upper Grainau and Lower Grainau and demonstrates country idyll. The most prominent landmark is the new-baroque church St. Johannes with a very pretty onion dome.
The village is a wonderful retreat place, offering magnificent views, but also providing access to lively Garmisch-Partenkirchen, which is only approx. 7 km away. In Grainau, holiday guests can explore winter sports activities, such as ice skating on the Bader-
and Eib lakes, cross-country skiing, tobogganing, sledging and of course skiing in the ski areas of the Zugspitze.
